Problems That Can be Faced By International Students

Students face several challenges when they decide to undertake their studies in a different country. Some of the challenges are universal in the sense that every foreigner student in a given institution will undergo them, while others are specific, depending on the institution one undertakes their studies. Some of these challenges are discussed below.

Language: This challenge is commonly experienced by students moving to countries where a different language is used. With the diversification of education and the introduction of exchange programs, sometimes it is essential that students from a given university tour another. When this is the case, the foreign students find it difficult to communicate with the natives. Learning becomes difficult because the students find it difficult to understand what is being taught, apart from the challenges they face to integrate with other students.

This is the most common challenge worldwide. In order to overcome this challenge, it is important for the international student to look for somebody who will translate to him. In this way, they will not only get to understand what was taught but also be in a better position to integrate with others.

Cultural changes: Culture defines the beliefs and traditions of a given society. Lack of universality in cultural practices means that a practice that is common in one region may be discouraged in another region. This may bring about emotional and physical discomfort to individuals deciding to live in a place different from their home. A good example of cultural changes may be experienced in the type of food offered. For instance, the Chinese take different foods from the Americans. Foreign students may, therefore, find it difficult to adopt. In order to overcome this challenge, one is advised to quickly adapt to the practices of the local community in order to feel at home.

Climatic changes: Different regions experience different climates and weather. This may prove to be a major challenge for any international student. For instance, some areas are generally cooler than others, while others are hotter. Adapting from one climatic condition to another may be quite challenging at the beginning. However, international students are advised to change their dressing style in order to adapt to the new conditions they may be facing.

Homesick: Because an international student will have to move from his home country to a different country, it is unavoidable that they will move away from their families. This is a difficult experience as it may lead to one taking much of their time thinking of their family members. Although this challenge is difficult to overcome, it is advisable that one considers the new friends as part of their family members. This way, they will be in a better position to avoid spending much of their time thinking of their families.

Although the above challenges may pose a problem to international students, the need for education supersedes them. As such, there is a great need of students moving from one country to another in order to learn. In America, for instance, the introduction of the ESTA visa ensures that more foreign students get an opportunity to learn.
